STEVEN ANDERSON
Steven Anderson is studying on the Master of Fine Art course at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee. He is a member of Labgroup the collective formed to show live work together monthly at the CCA.
His performances involve singing and quiet gestures. Part of his inspiration comes from oral traditions of storytelling, ballads and mouth music including puirt a beul music from the West of Scotland, travellers’ tales from figures such as Sheila Stewart and Finnish Folk music. Some tracks from his music collection were played before and after the screening programme.
The image above shows Steven Anderson ( right of picture) doing a performance at The State bar in Glasgow. He is interested in dissolving the boundaries between the performer and the audience – I think it is to create a more communal and intimate experience rather than a hierarchical one. In the performance at The State, Steven asked members of the audience to lend him an accessory for him to wear. This led to him donning cheap plastic bracelets and cherished antique rings. He makes links between himself and his audience in other ways too – for example the Transitional State audience were asked to tick off the year of their birth on a sheet of handwritten years. These years were read out in unison by Steven Anderson and his co-performer on the night, Nadine, in a slow consolidating final section to his performance.
